Manufacturers in Bangladesh, India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka can all sell to US Amazon shoppers. The work is the same four spans everywhere: entity and compliance, brand, listing and catalog, operations. Country changes the paperwork and the payout route.
- Payouts: Amazon documents deposits of US proceeds to Indian bank accounts in INR with no US company needed. We found no public Amazon page listing BDT, PKR or LKR; check the Amazon Currency Converter supported list in Seller Central, or plan on a USD receiving account.
- You or your provider are the importer of record and Amazon won't pay your duties. US de minimis has been suspended for goods from all countries since August 29, 2025, so every FBA shipment needs a customs entry with duties paid.
- Compliance is by category: CPSC certificates for children's products, FTC labels for textiles, FDA registration for cosmetics. A foreign-domiciled trademark applicant must file through a US-licensed attorney.
- Launch one hero product, priced from a full landed-cost model with export incentives left out, before you scale the line.
Short answer: a factory in Dhaka, Delhi, Karachi or Colombo can sell its own brand to US Amazon shoppers, and the route is the same four spans in every country: set up the entity and compliance, build a brand Amazon recognizes, publish a listing to US standard, and run the operations (freight, customs, inventory, payouts). What country changes is the export registration, whether Amazon can pay you in your home currency, and which categories your industrial clusters give you a right to win. Since August 2025 there is no duty-free low-value route into the US, so price every product from a full landed-cost model before the first purchase order.
- The bridge
- Our name for the move from contract manufacturing (making products for someone else's brand at a wholesale price) to selling your own brand directly to US marketplace shoppers. It has four sequential spans: entity and compliance, brand, listing and catalog, and operations.
Why should a manufacturer sell brand-owned on Amazon instead of wholesale?
Because the margin you're missing lives in brand, listing and trust, not in the product. Say a factory makes a jacket for $6 that a US brand sells for $40 on Amazon (a hypothetical, but the shape is familiar to anyone in contract manufacturing). Most of the gap isn't manufacturing cost; it's the brand's freight, duty, Amazon fees and advertising, and then the brand margin. Selling direct means carrying those costs yourself in exchange for that margin, the customer relationship and the reviews.
| Dimension | Wholesale / contract | Brand-owned on US Amazon |
|---|---|---|
| Margin captured | Thin, set by buyer negotiation | Brand margin you set, after fees and ads |
| Customer relationship | Owned by the brand | Owned by you |
| Data and reviews | The brand's | Yours, and they compound |
| Pricing power | Race to the lowest quote | Differentiation and trust |
| Demand risk | One buyer can drop you | Many customers, more diversified |
| Cash and risk | Paid on the order | You fund inventory, freight, duty and ads up front |
The last row is the honest one. Brand-owned selling moves working-capital risk onto the factory: you pay for freight and US duty before the first sale and wait for Amazon's disbursement cycle after it. That's why the guide below front-loads the paperwork and the cost model. Before you pick the product, read the hero product selection framework.
Can a South Asian manufacturer sell on US Amazon directly?
Often, yes, though whether you need a US company depends on your country and your bank. Amazon's guide for international sellers says you can have US sales proceeds deposited to a bank account in your country, and also that you may need to create a legal business entity in the US (Amazon US selling guide). Both are true for different sellers. India is the clearest case: Amazon's India export page says you don't need a US company to sell on Amazon US from India and lists identity proof, address proof and business registration (IEC, GST) as the documents.
For Bangladesh, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, check two things before you spend on anything else. First, whether your country is on Amazon's list of countries accepted for seller registration, which lives in Seller Central help (login required) and changes over time. Second, whether Amazon can pay out in your currency, covered in the payout section below. If either answer is no, a US entity with a US bank account becomes the practical route, with US tax filings that come with it.
- Importer of record (IOR)
- The party legally responsible for a shipment entering the US: filing the customs entry, paying duties, taxes and fees, and meeting every import rule. For FBA inventory that is you or a provider you appoint, never Amazon.
Whatever the entity, the customs role is fixed. Amazon says that you or your provider must act as exporter of record and importer of record, and that Amazon is not responsible for customs duties and taxes on FBA inventory. Entity choice, US tax IDs and the documents that keep an account from freezing are in the US compliance checklist for South Asian exporters.
What changes by country: Bangladesh, India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka?
Less than founders expect. The differences sit in span 1 (export registration and how money comes home) and in which categories your clusters give you a right to win. Brand, listing and operations are the same work from Gazipur to Sialkot.
| Checkpoint | Bangladesh | India | Pakistan | Sri Lanka |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Home export registration | ERC from CCI&E, online | IEC from DGFT, plus GST | Check with your export authority and bank | Business registration, Inland Revenue (TIN/VAT), Sri Lanka Customs; EDB registration voluntary |
| Amazon payout in home currency | Not on public Amazon pages; check Seller Central | Yes: INR to an Indian bank via Amazon Currency Converter | Not on public Amazon pages; check Seller Central | Not on public Amazon pages; check Seller Central |
| US company needed? | Depends on registration and payout answers | No, per Amazon India | Depends on registration and payout answers | Depends on registration and payout answers |
| Cluster strengths to start from | Apparel, home textiles, leather | Home textiles, wellness, kitchen | Textiles, sports goods, grooming instruments | Apparel, rubber goods, coconut-based products |
| The four spans | Identical | Identical | Identical | Identical |
Bangladesh
Exporters register with the Office of the Chief Controller of Imports and Exports (CCI&E) for an Export Registration Certificate. Bangladesh Customs lists the ERC as issued by CCI&E, applied for online, with five-year validity (Bangladesh Customs tariff hub). Export proceeds come home through your authorized-dealer bank, which applies Bangladesh Bank's rules on repatriation; ask it what it needs for marketplace sales before you register with Amazon, not after. The apparel and home-textile base is deep; the brand-owned presence on US Amazon is thin, which is the opportunity.
India
India has the most documented route. Amazon's India-to-US page says an Indian company can sell on Amazon US without a US company, with an IEC and GST registration among the documents, and that payment can be received in INR directly in your bank account (Amazon Global Selling India). India also runs export incentive schemes whose names and rates change with policy cycles; check the current versions with your export consultant, model unit economics without them, and treat whatever you receive as cushion.
Pakistan
Confirm registration eligibility on Amazon's accepted-countries list in Seller Central, then solve money before freight. We found no public Amazon page listing PKR as a payout currency, so most sellers plan on a USD receiving account and repatriate through an authorized-dealer bank. Ask that bank how it applies State Bank of Pakistan rules on export proceeds to marketplace sales, and keep the paper trail clean from the first order. Sialkot's instrument makers should note that grooming kits and surgical instruments can come off the same line but live under different US rules; anything sold with a medical claim needs FDA review before it's a hero candidate.
Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka's Export Development Board revoked its mandatory exporter registration scheme in 2019 and now keeps a voluntary one, but an exporter must still register with the Inland Revenue Department (TIN/VAT) and Sri Lanka Customs, with a business registration or incorporation certificate (Sri Lanka EDB). As with Pakistan and Bangladesh, confirm Amazon registration and LKR payout support in Seller Central before you commit. Food categories such as tea and spices bring FDA food rules, a separate compliance track this guide doesn't cover.
The payout question is the one that most often decides whether you need a US entity. The full set of options is in payment rails for South Asian manufacturers.
How do Amazon payouts reach a bank in Dhaka, Delhi, Karachi or Colombo?
- Payout rails
- The path Amazon's disbursements take to your company account: a direct deposit in your home currency where Amazon supports it, or a USD account (your own US bank account or a payment provider's receiving account) followed by conversion and transfer home.
Amazon pays net proceeds (sales minus fees) to the bank account registered on your seller account. Its currency service, Amazon Currency Converter for Sellers, converts and transfers funds from Amazon stores into 20+ payout currencies (Amazon Currency Converter). Whether your currency is one of them is the deciding question, and the public page doesn't list them all; the authoritative list is the supported countries, regions and currencies page in Seller Central help (login required).
Here is what we could verify on public Amazon pages as of October 22, 2026. India: yes. Amazon says US proceeds can be deposited to a bank account in India, received in INR, and Amazon's Seller Wallet lists INR among the currencies it transfers to, with a downloadable Foreign Inward Remittance Advice for India-based accounts (Amazon Seller Wallet). Bangladesh (BDT), Pakistan (PKR), Sri Lanka (LKR): not confirmed. None appears on any public Amazon page we checked. Treat them as unsupported until you see them on the Seller Central list for your account.
Where your currency isn't supported, Amazon pays into a USD account instead: a US bank account (Amazon accepts one as the deposit method for Amazon.com) owned by your US entity, or a USD receiving account from a payment service provider that serves marketplace sellers. Then a second step converts and moves the money home through your bank. That second leg is where most of the cost hides, usually in the exchange-rate spread rather than the advertised fee.
- 01
Check your currency
Open the Amazon Currency Converter supported list in Seller Central and confirm your currency and bank country.
- 02
Pick the rail
Direct home-currency deposit if supported; otherwise a US entity's bank account or a payment provider's USD account.
- 03
Brief your bank
Ask your authorized-dealer bank what export-proceeds documentation it needs for marketplace sales, and set it up before the first sale.
- 04
Test with a small disbursement
Prove the whole loop (sale, disbursement, conversion, arrival, paperwork) before inventory is on the water.
- 05
Compare effective rates
Measure what actually lands per $1,000 disbursed, not the fee line, and re-check every quarter.
Provider types, fee and timing comparisons, and first-year mistakes are in payment rails: getting paid from US sales in BDT, INR and PKR.
Who pays US customs duties on an FBA shipment, and is there still a de minimis exemption?
You do, as importer of record or through the provider acting for you. Duty is set by the product's classification in the Harmonized Tariff Schedule plus any additional duties in force when the goods enter. Your customs broker files the entry; CBP decides whether to release the goods, ask for documents or examine them. On the size of entry, CBP says informal entry is generally allowed for shipments valued at $2,500 or less, subject to eligibility, and formal entry is required above that (CBP e-commerce FAQ).
- De minimis (Section 321)
- The US administrative exemption that let shipments valued at $800 or less enter free of duty and taxes with minimal paperwork. Suspended for goods from all countries since August 29, 2025.
There is no low-value shortcut any more. CBP suspended duty-free de minimis treatment for goods of all countries at 12:01 a.m. ET on August 29, 2025, under Executive Order 14324; since then filers must submit a formal or informal entry and pay all applicable duties, taxes and fees (CBP CSMS 66065494). It applied regardless of value, origin, transport mode or entry method, not just to commercial shipments. On June 24, 2026, CBP made the suspension indefinite by interim final rule, and the statute itself ends the exemption on July 1, 2027. For FBA sellers shipping by sea or air in cartons, nothing about this is optional: every shipment is an entry with duty paid.
Tariff rates and additional duties on goods from South Asia have changed several times since 2025 and may change again. We don't print rates here. Before you price a product, look up its current classification and rate in the USITC Harmonized Tariff Schedule, ask your broker which additional duties apply on the entry date, and check CBP's current guidance on de minimis and entry types.
The shipment itself, from choosing ocean or air to labeling cartons for the FBA warehouse, is walked through in freight and customs: the manufacturer's first shipment.
How do I calculate landed cost to US FBA?
Add six line items per unit: factory unit cost, freight to the FBA warehouse, US duties and fees, FBA fulfillment fees, Amazon referral fees, and a returns reserve. A wholesale FOB or CIF quote stops before the two items new sellers underestimate most: US duty and the FBA fee stack. Pricing off the factory quote is how a product that looks like a 50% margin at home turns into a loss on the shelf.
- Unit cost at the quantity you'll actually order, including packaging built to Amazon's prep rules.
- Freight door to the FBA warehouse: ocean or air, origin charges, destination charges, drayage.
- Duties and fees at the current HTS rate plus any additional duties, and customs processing fees.
- FBA fulfillment fee by size and weight tier, from Amazon's current fee schedule.
- Referral fee as a percentage of the selling price, by category.
- Returns reserve sized to your category, before you have real return data.
Run the model twice: once with today's duty rate and once with a higher what-if rate. If the product only works at today's rate, it isn't a hero; it's a bet on tariff policy. The same rule applies to export incentives: leave them out of the base case.
A worked, line-by-line example and how the components shift by category are in landed cost math: South Asia to US FBA. To run your own numbers, use the free landed-cost calculator.
Which US compliance rules apply to my product?
Product rules follow the category, not the country of origin, and they bind whoever imports. Four come up most for South Asian factories. They are pointers to the regulator's own page, not legal advice; a compliance consultant or US counsel should confirm what applies to your exact product.
| If you sell | Rule | What it requires | Who |
|---|---|---|---|
| Children's products | CPSC Children's Product Certificate | A written certificate based on testing by a third-party, CPSC-accepted lab | The importer (or US manufacturer) |
| Apparel and home textiles | FTC Textile and Wool Acts | Labels with fiber content, country of origin and company name or RN; online listings must disclose origin | Whoever sells or imports |
| Cosmetics and personal care | FDA MoCRA | Facility registration, product listing, serious adverse event reports within 15 business days, safety substantiation | Manufacturer and the responsible person |
| Your brand name | USPTO rules | Foreign-domiciled applicants must be represented by a US-licensed attorney | The trademark applicant |
The textile rule catches the most factories, because a spec sheet isn't a label. The FTC says covered textile products must be labeled with fiber content, country of origin and either the company name or Registered Identification Number, and that internet advertising must disclose country of origin (FTC textile labeling guide). For children's products, CPSC requires importers to certify compliance in a Children's Product Certificate based on third-party lab results. For cosmetics, FDA's MoCRA page lists facility registration, product listing and adverse event reporting among the requirements.
Category by category, plus the entity, tax and customs paperwork that keeps an account open, is in the US compliance checklist for South Asian exporters.
How does an OEM factory become a brand Amazon recognizes?
Through a trademark, then Brand Registry. Amazon says Brand Registry enrollment needs a fully registered or pending trademark (Amazon Brand Registry), and enrollment is what unlocks A+ content, Brand Analytics, Sponsored Brands and the protection tools that stop other sellers riding your listing. For the US store that usually means a USPTO application.
Two procedural points matter more than the name itself. The USPTO requires foreign-domiciled applicants to be represented by an attorney licensed in the US (USPTO), so budget for one. And the application must be filed in your company's name, not a sourcing agent's or consultant's: whoever owns the trademark owns the Brand Registry role and, in practice, the brand.
- Run a knockout search on the name yourself before you pay anyone, including close spellings and the goods class you'll sell in.
- File through a US-licensed attorney in your company's legal name, matching every other document.
- Enroll in Brand Registry with the pending application if your trademark office qualifies, rather than waiting for registration.
- Use the unlocked tools in order: A+ content, Brand Analytics, then protection.
Naming, filing and what each Brand Registry tool does are in from OEM to brand: naming, trademark and registry.
Which product should a manufacturer launch first on Amazon?
One hero product, not the line. The most common failure is breadth before depth: twenty listings each done to sixty percent of US-brand standard. The market rewards the opposite. Pick the product that scores well on four dimensions at once: margin headroom after the full landed cost, defensibility against a cheaper copy, compliance simplicity, and your factory's ability to make it consistently at volume.
- 01
Start from your cluster's strength
A product where your industrial cluster gives you a real right to win, from the country table above.
- 02
Model landed cost without incentives
If it only works with duty remission or drawback, or at today's tariff rate, drop it.
- 03
Prefer simple compliance for product one
A children's product or a cosmetic adds certification, registration and testing to a launch that already has enough moving parts.
- 04
Cross all four spans for that one SKU
Entity, brand, listing, operations, fully, before you touch the next product.
- 05
Prove the loop, then scale
Reviews in, unit economics confirmed, replenishment across the ocean working, payouts landing. Then the next SKU, on a playbook you've validated.
The scoring table to run across your own line is in the hero product selection framework.
What do South Asian exporters get wrong on Amazon?
The same patterns repeat across all four countries, and most trace back to running a marketplace business with wholesale instincts. If your plan includes any of these, fix it before the first purchase order.
- Pricing like a factory. Wholesale taught the region that the order goes to the lowest quote. On Amazon your real price competition is the factory down the street with your cost base, and a price war between neighbors has no winner. Brand margin is the reason to cross; pricing to the bottom gives it away on day one.
- Translating the spec sheet and calling it a listing. GSM and thread count matter, but as structured attributes under copy written for a US shopper's questions.
- Treating compliance as a freight problem. Labels, certificates and registrations are span 1. A compliance failure can freeze the account everything else is built on.
- Building on incentive or tariff math. If the economics only clear with a subsidy or today's duty rate, one policy change ends the business.
- Shipping before the money loop works. Inventory at FBA with no tested payout route is the expensive way to discover your currency isn't supported.
- Running US customer service on factory hours. Response times and review replies are trust signals that shoppers, Amazon and AI assistants all read.
Account verification, trademark, bank, customs and tax documents should all carry the identical legal entity name and address. Mismatches are a common reason new accounts stall in verification, and they're entirely avoidable.
Why does AI shopping change the entry cost for new sellers?
Because an assistant now sits between the shopper and your listing. Alexa for Shopping (formerly Rufus) answers questions and compares products from catalog data, reviews and Q&A, and off-Amazon assistants such as ChatGPT and Perplexity do the same from the open web. They recommend products whose facts they can read and trust. A price-first listing hands them one number, and there's always a lower one; a brand-first listing hands them attributes, substantiated claims and reviews to cite.
For a new entrant this is good news. Most incumbents in your category haven't done the structured catalog work properly, so a manufacturer who does (complete attributes, A+ with real specifics, a review program inside Amazon's rules) can out-execute established brands on the one thing the assistants weigh. How to build that listing is in Amazon listing and ads operations for Alexa for Shopping.
FAQ
Do I need a US company to sell on Amazon from South Asia?
- Not always. Amazon says Indian businesses can sell on Amazon US without a US company and be paid in INR. For Bangladesh, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, it depends on whether your country is on Amazon's accepted registration list and whether Amazon can pay out in your currency. If either answer is no, a US entity with a US bank account is the usual route.
Can Amazon pay me directly in BDT, INR, PKR or LKR?
- INR, yes: Amazon documents deposits of US proceeds to Indian bank accounts through Amazon Currency Converter for Sellers. We found no public Amazon page listing BDT, PKR or LKR as of October 2026. Check the supported currencies list in Seller Central; if yours isn't there, you'll need a USD account and a second transfer home.
Is there still a de minimis exemption for shipments to the US?
- No. CBP suspended duty-free de minimis treatment for goods of all countries on August 29, 2025, made the suspension indefinite on June 24, 2026, and the statute ends it on July 1, 2027. Every shipment now needs a formal or informal entry with duties, taxes and fees paid.
Who pays US import duty on FBA inventory?
- The importer of record, which is you or a provider you appoint. Amazon says it is not responsible for customs duties and taxes on FBA inventory. Your customs broker files the entry using the product's HTS classification, and duty is due on entry. Look up current rates on the USITC HTS before pricing.
How do I register a trademark in the US as a foreign manufacturer?
- File with the USPTO through a US-licensed attorney, which the USPTO requires for foreign-domiciled applicants. File in your company's own legal name. Amazon Brand Registry accepts a registered or pending trademark, so you can usually enroll once the application is filed instead of waiting for registration.
Which product should I launch first on US Amazon?
- One hero product with real margin after full landed cost, a defensible difference, simple compliance and consistent production at volume. Model it without export incentives and at a higher duty rate than today's. Launch it to a full US-brand standard, prove the loop, then add the next SKU.
Should I count export incentives in my unit economics?
- No. South Asian governments run various export support schemes, but names, rates and eligibility change with policy cycles. Model the product without them and treat anything you receive as cushion. A product that only works with the subsidy is one policy revision away from losing its margin.
Is this guide only for Bangladesh manufacturers?
- No. It covers Bangladesh, India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, and the four spans apply to any manufacturer selling into the US. The URL keeps its original Bangladesh name, but the country sections, payout options and compliance pointers serve the whole region.
